Sarah Zhang
Each of us has a unique family history. Through time, our ancestors have transmitted an assemblage of dispositions and traits to us, formed by collected memories, experiences, talents, relationships, and events. For ancestors who left no photographs or letters, historical context helps us understand the circumstance under which they made life choices, such as where they moved, whom they married, and how they supported themselves. Learning about their circumstances and choices means learning more about oneself and our society, and with that, we benefit from an increased sense of identity, purpose, resiliency, and empathy.
There is immense emotional value in discovering family stories and the context of our family’s lives. There is also social value in sharing our ancestor's history because, in the retelling, we reanimate them as people and reintroduce them, their struggles, and triumphs to our present world.
